Following his comeback single ‘See you in a bit.’, released after his hiatus of over one and a half years from music and social media, Jakarta-based pop artist Jove Satara is releasing a blazing follow-up single and his first single in 2021 cheekily titled ‘20/20’, a trap-influenced alternative indie pop track that combines the metaphor of the perfect vision with the challenges faced in the year 2020.
Written by the artist himself and produced and mixed by both Jove and his longtime collaborator Karirino Pasay, ‘20/20’ is a striking reminder of what it means to fight for yourself, even if it’s just through seeing better perspectives. Inspired by his own independent artistic journey that he started in 2019, like many other independent creatives, he was forced to put a pause on his journey due to challenges within the pandemic. However, he took the time to recalibrate his resources as an independent artist to ensure that he will be able to thrive artistically in 2021.
The entirety of Jove’s message still rings true, especially for underdogs like himself. Using this song as a story, he wrote in the perspective of a canonical nerd being bullied in a middle school playground and paralleled the coming-of-age experience with the collective trauma for today’s generation living through the 2020 pandemic. As his last song was an ode to personal escapism that is tied with individual liberation in the midst of quarantine, this song grippingly violates the previous notions of his song–urging the need of not only a positive think piece–but a powerful one.
Jove Satara’s music encourages his listeners to be the protagonist of their own life, acting as a bold resistance as well as a necessary encouragement to each individual's experiences. The messages of his sharp lyrics are further amplified with a mixture of his character vocals and dauntless synth arrangements, a compelling combination that adds an intricate visceral ambience to the multilayered song piece.
Gaining influences from the artistic echelon of Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, MARINA, the Weeknd and Lorde, he conscientiously assimilates them for pouring their hearts into their respective works instead of conforming to the industry, aspiring to make conscious music through a gravity-filled persona. Through his follow-up single, Jove Satara will once again attempt to prove the creed of the independent musician and the power of each individual voice.
