Not many people know that young artist from South East Asia did a collaboration under YES Academy ASEAN in 2016. Located in Taman Ismail Marzuki Jakarta, Indonesia, the show was a huge success. The event was sponsored by American Embassy in Indonesia and other embassies all over ASEAN. The aim is to spot young talents and to strengthen the relation between countries.
Every year the YES Academy ASEAN is held in a different place. In 2016, it was Indonesia's turn to host, while previously held in Bangkok, Thailand. Inviting more than 100 talented young people in the arts such as musicians, actors, dancers and people from diverse background to practice and perform collaborative shows. In this second year, 107 young people has participated and trained for 12 days.
“This is one of many ways to build bonds between people and among young people from different countries, not just their music skills, but also entrepreneurial skills,” said Brian McFeeters, United States Deputy Ambassador for Indonesia. The academy offers a singer and songwriter programs, Hip Hop Music, Hip Hop Dance and Broadway Musical programs.
What’s interesting is that they have a Cultural Entrepreneurship class, where participants can learn about practical skills for making proposals and funding. The best part is that the participants not merely learned about arts but also how they can give back to the community as well.
In order for the people to participate, YES Academy ASEAN selection process is only through online audition. The participants were selected based on their experience, interests and essay. The essay topic stresses how can they give back to their community once they are done with the academy.
For people who have interest but does not work in Art Industries, YES Academy considered all background. For example, Paolo Guico from the Philippines comes from an industrial engineering background. However, Guico's interest in making music and create songs. That's what made him participate and selected in YES Academy.
