Indonesia’s richest man and eldest Indonesian athlete in the 2018 Asian Games, Michael Bambang Hartono, on Sunday took home the bronze medal from the bridge super mixed team event in Jakarta.
The 78-year-old bridge athlete, who owns the Djarum clove cigarette company and Bank BCA with his brother Budi Hartono, surrendered 60-137 to the China team in the semifinals at the Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo).
Aside from Bambang, the Indonesia supermixed team comprised Bert Toar Polii, 64, Frangky Karwur, 52, Jemmy Bojoh, 47, and two women players Conny Sumampauw, 43, and Rury Andhani, 34.
Indonesia pocketed another bronze in the men’s mixed team event, with bridge players Taufik Asbi, Lusje Bojoh, Robert Parasian, Joice Tuejeh, Bill Mondingir and Ervita Lasut losing 87-121, also to China.
"The opponent [China] showed consistent performance. They are the world women's team champion. Three of [the players] on the mixed team are 2017 world champions,” Indonesia non-playing captain Hendra Railis commented.
Bridge is offering six gold medals at its Asian Games debut.
Indonesia failed to pass the men’s team preliminary round, but still has a chance in the men’s, women’s and mixed pair events.
